School House
The Clayton Independent School was built in 1860. It was used for 103 consecutive years. The school was consolidated with Garnavillo Community school in 1961. Seventh grade and above were bused to Garnavillo for school, while kindergarten through sixth grade remained in the building until it closed. The school was registered by the National Historical Society in 1963. In 1964, the Iowa Daughters of the American Revolution presented the community with a plaque recognizing this distinction.
